Ask Michael Dunn what motivates him and the likely answer is: winning. Ask him what he loves doing most and he’ll probably say: giving advice. What does he value: reputation. What concerns Michael: taking care of people. When is he satisfied: never! Ask what makes him passionate, and his answer may surprise you: discovering the soul of a home. What sets Michael Dunn apart in his industry: experience.
Michael Dunn is a husband, father, mentor, teacher, competitor and the principal of one of Sydney’s most successful real estate companies. He is a real estate agent by definition, not recognition, because as his clients often remark “Michael, there’s such a difference between the way you do things compared to other agents”.
“What is important to me”, says Michael, “is doing the right thing by people. Certainly the number of sales or records we achieve remind us we are successful, but they don’t even come close to what really matters to me and that is my reputation and that of my team”.
Michael Dunn has been in the business of property since 1977 and took over the helm of his Double Bay agency in 1983. These statistics alone set him above his peers and his track record and that of R&WDB is unequalled.
Seen as an outfit that are more conservative in their approach, Michael is quietly amused. “I was brought up with old fashioned ethics and it is interesting to see in these times of commercial opportunism, that there are plenty of people seeking us out for the reason that we do provide ‘safe passage’. At the same time, to remain at the top of such a competitive industry we could not survive if we didn't seek out new technology, ideas, a sound ethical business base, fresh creative approaches and mesh them with the work ethos we have traditionally practiced so effectively. I firmly believe I do what I do better than most, for the simple reason that I see my work more as a mission than a job”.
Is Michael ever satisfied? “No, because if you are, you’re of no use to anyone. I don’t believe in prejudices or the word 'can’t'. I believe raising the bar on one’s self is essential to staying fit mentally, to staying on top competitively, to delivering the best for my clients professionally”.
Probably no other principal has created, in the course of his career, so many top-flight sales people in real estate. His stable of agents are seen as industry thoroughbreds, solid performers with plenty of experience.
Perseverance is a trait people readily see in Michael. “I think I actually loathe losing more than I like winning. My father held the record as the fastest sprinter in Australia for 20 years, so there it is... I am very competitive. It’s genetic! I succeed where others don’t because I genuinely still find a fascination for what I do. To do it better each time. To do it differently. To challenge myself daily. Athletes do that and it’s applicable to whatever we do in life. To walk into a home for the first time excites me because I nose around till I find its soul. Every property has one. To recognise it and then bring those qualities out into the open for others to experience is exciting. Of course as any great athlete will tell you, to be better, you’ve got to keep on practising, see what needs refining and still feel there’s more to achieve. It’s that desire to keep on perfecting what I do by working at my profession, which I believe makes me better at what I do than anyone else. Experience. Pure and simple”. |
